So, If you’re like me, you power walk past Sephora in an attempt to avoid some outrageously expensive product from catching your eye. Now, many of these products are absolutely fabulous, but there are some things you need to consider before splurging.
1. How long is this product going to last you?
Look at the fluid ounces and check the instructions. So many times I have bought a new product that looked like a decent sized bottle only to see that the fluid ounces weren’t any more than my old product. If the instructions indicate to apply generously, then you can also assume the product will get used up quickly.
2. What do the reviews say about it?
With our access to internet directly from our purses, there is no excuse anymore not to do your homework when purchasing a pricey product. Take a quick look at Amazon or look up good blogs about it. In some cases, you can scan the product. Just because your friend adores a product, doesn’t mean that you will. Everyone’s skin is different but if 100 consumers have rated a product well, you might just love it.
3. Check your prices
This goes along with checking reviews online, it’s easy to price check products online. Be careful with distributors that you haven’t heard of before. There are a lot of “knock off’s” of high end makeup and products. Some are even sold on the internet at a discount because they have expired. Because the US doesn’t require that manufacturers of beauty products label an expiration date, you could essentially be purchasing a product that is a year old. Scary!
4. Check your Inbox
Before you go out to the mall or rush onto a website to purchase an amazing product, check your inbox. If you are on company’s emailing list, you might find a special promotion or discount. So many times, I have purchased a beauty product only to find a 10% off coupon in my inbox. Don’t do this! Those emails get annoying but they can save you money if you pay attention.
5. Ask if the store you are purchasing from, offers any samples or promotions
If you’re going to drop $50-$80 on a face lotion, see if they offer any samples of it first. You might hate it or you might love it, but at least you will know right off the bat. Sometimes store’s offer rewards for your purchases, ask what they are. While you’re at it, ask the associate if they expect your product to go on sale soon!
6. Ask about the return policy
If the store you are purchasing from has a no return or exchange policy, run! I’m always a bit skeptical about companies that say they have a return policy but only if the product is unopened. How can you find out if you like it?!
7. Make sure you will actually use the product
If you’re purchasing it and saying to yourself, “Oh yes, I’ll use this in Vegas when I go next.” That might not be for a while, and it might have expired by then. Wait until you actually need the product, you might have found a better one by then anyways. If you open up your cabinets in your bathroom and you see a ton of products that you’ve hardly ever touched (like most of us) you really need to be smart when it comes to your purchase.
And there you have it, I try to keep my splurges to every 3-4 months out of the year. This way, I know I’ll appreciate my new purchase. I’m not going to lie, sometimes I just look at the bottles for a little while, admiring them.
Enjoy and happy shopping!
